Good to hear about your plans for writing a second book and including narration about our ancestral village. As for my activities from 1957-63, instead of posting them here, I will prefer to mail these to you and do it just now. The private worship place was established (STHAPIT) by my respected grandfather and during his lifetime only, present structure was built under his supervision by my uncle and father. I remember, it having a beautiful small garden in its court yard which was being looked after SUCHETA Lumberdar of Marad village till he died. (Sucheta is supposed to be a soldier of world war I and remained our sincere chowkidar)

Good to engage in this conversation in the cyber space. I would have tough time to believe your time frame of 1964-65. Because once i returned to the college when i was at Engineering college third year, AR Khanna was not there. That would be 1962 or 1963. Forget this topic. I did not you were SDB College as a Regular as well as private. Hence what did you do at Benaras 1957-60 and what did you do at S D B College 1960-63. Did you finish your degree at Benaras or at Shimla. 1957-63 is awfully long time for under graduate studies....... I rarely visited Shimla from 1970 till 2205 except to meet my wife's family. That too for the shortest duration. It was a chance enquiry in 2005 at wedding that one Shimla Wala mentioned that Vishwa can be found at your Lower Bazzar shop. Now i was overcome with curiosity to see you in person as soon as possible. That is how i met you in 2007. Hence pardon my ignorance on your career from 1957 onwards. Then i saw wikimapia and your work on Pirsaluhi; i was amazed. I knew you still have that penchant for hard work which you had in school. I am beginning my work on my second book; there is something i want you to tell me. That is who built the Balak Rupi temple in your ancestors. This is a private worship place and only people of means built private worship place. Also any date on arrival of Pir at Pirsaluhi. Logic says that the holy man found a water source and wished to stay close to it. His horses could not go down the steep climb so he left it on the cliff, hence Kakki Ghori. Revenue records are scanty or none. The pir Masjid has its time line to Raja Abhiraj Singh of Jaswan. Hence who came first the Pir or the Suds/Soods. Your other information on litigation on Pir land is most valuable. Trust me i am going to enter it in my second book.... Cheers Hari

Hari, I am sure that AR Khanna was there all this time as principal. I was in Banaras from 1957- to 1960 and joined here in 1960 till 1963 as a regular and as a private (only for science practicals of Bsc class) during 1963-64.Mr Khanna was there and I too had my 'character certificate' signed by him in 1963.It must be lying in my old files to gather dust. He was a very tough guy- magnanimous at heart- though short structured person and liked our group ( Ved s/o Late Sh Lakhu Ram- you may remember him, one Vijay Pandit and one R L Vohra- you may not know these two persons- all three my lifelong friends were from St. Edwards.) A R Khanna liked us very much because our mischiefs were always HARMLESS and original.Occasionally, We would not even hesitate to request his wife to make us a cup of tea. We were favorite with her as well. Mr Khanna may have remained in the house for a few days after retiring and met his sudden end while he was not in Shimla.Mrs Khanna had been greatly impressed by us because we had arranged to offer her special imported chocolates during one college picnic. Khanna may have been relieved of his job in later half of 1964 or 1965 because till March, 1964 I used to visit science lab every afternoon and he was the man who allowed this facility to me as a special case. Mr R K Mehrotra may have become Principal later on but by that time I had become so busy with my work that I would not care to find out about college happenings. One thing is for sure... If R K Mehrotra (KUKKAD was his nick name given by students) were to be principal during my stay in college as a regular or private, he would have never permitted me in the college compound because he was never happy with me. Talking of Mr. Mehrotr's daughter.... My friend Vijay pandit was engaged for her English tuition by Prof Mehrotra (she was in School) but Mr Mehrotra dispensed with these services because my friend used to ask for advance fee almost every day.

Good to hear from you Vishwa Nath. When were you at SDB college? My understanding is that during the tumultuous years of 1957-59; you were in Benaras. Yes my error, the Math professor was M.L. Sharma not RK Sharma as I wrote earlier above. Things had settled down by the time I left in May 1959 after finishing my F.Sc. Principal AR Khanna played a major role in settling the situation. Also, I would not know his walking habits. I do not socialize with a college principal at the age of 18; nor anybody else would dare to play pranks with him. He was towering figure; well respected and well feared. My brief knowledge of him was that boys and girls would fall in line when he stepped out of his office. That was the type of principal needed to control the unruly students; some of whom were still there after the summer break of 1959. Some like me got tired and left for Chandigarh. A short insight. I ran into R.K. Mehrotra's daughter during my last trip to India. She referred to her father as "Principal". Ovisously he must have returned back to principalship after AR Khanna left. Incidently the latter had only a two year stint at SDB College, hence where does the date of 1965 time frame fits into this. If I believe you then he was principal for six years. It is impossible for me to believe that long a period. Also AR Khanna was an old man in 1959. He may have liked Simla so much that he continued to stay longer as resident but not as a principal of SDB College. ..... Cheers

My friend Hari gave me information prior to 1960 when I joined here after returning from Banaras Hindu University. A R Khanna was already the principal when I joined here. Mr B K Sharma was principal, I am aware of that but never knew that R K Mehrotra was also the principal. R K Mehrotra used to teach us Physics and was not very favourite with students. Sh A R Khanna stayed here as principal for more than four years (and not for two years as Hari says) because in 1964 and even in early 1965, he used to be here as the principal and we used to play pranks with him although I was not a student of the college. Mr Khanna was very much fond of walking and used to have, at least once a day,a walk from S D B College-to Sanjauli-to St Bedes College-to The ridge and then to his home in the college compound. On many occasions he would repeat his walk in the afternoon as well. I was one of his pet students. A person fond of long walks died suddenly of cardiac arrest when he was with his son at Allahbad. A R Khanna was creme from Govt college Lahore as I understand. As for maths professor, I think his name is being confused he was Mr Madan Sharma, a bachelor. He is still as young as he used to be fifty years ago. He can be seen daily on the Mall and in the Shimla ADC Club.
